1900–01 Stoke F.C. season
The 1900-1901 season was Stoke's 13th season of league football. It was also the first season of the 20th Century.
Overview
By now Stoke had lost the valuable services of previous players Jack Robertson, Jack Kennedy and Joe Turner also Jack Eccles became club trainer. In the 1900-01 season Stoke collected just two points from the first eight games and it was no surprise to see that Stoke at the bottom of the table. The situation did improve when Mart Watkins arrived from Oswestry Town but Stoke were seemingly always tied down to being in the relegation dog-fight which would be settled on the final day of the Season.
Stoke's reaming two games were both away to Wolves and Notts County. While the other relegation rivals Preston and West Brom faced each other. Stoke came out victorious in both games while Preston lost which relegated both West Brom and Preston meaning that Stoke were safe in 16th position.
It had been a tense and difficult season and a FA Cup defeat to Small Heath in the first round did little to boost morale. The club's finances were now in a very precarious state, both manager and chairman recognized this and the club would now look at the local leagues for players.
